Dries Van Noten Fall 2011 Menswear Collection
“Fashion! Turn to the left.
Fashion! Turn to the right.” – David Bowie
Dries Van Noten‘s fall 2011 menswear collection shined with its cuts, textures, fabrics and homage to David Bowie. According to Style.com Dries Van Noten said, “I wanted something glamorous without being feminine,” and that was certainly accomplished. The models sauntering down the runway resembled Bowie with their skin tone, slicked back, red-tinted hair and sharp shoulders.
The cuts and tailoring of each piece is impeccable. While many of the pants have more give to them, they don’t overwhelm the male figure and look perfectly tailored for a relaxed-formal chic look. I love how the loose pants are contrasted by a well fitting blazer. I love how the sharp and fitted suit on the runway has the surprise element of a fur lapel. It adds texture, a signature and flair to what would be a more basic suit. Maybe you aren’t into fur, but adding a surprising element and your own touch to a well-fitted suit will make you stand out in a wonderful way.
One of the other pieces that I am lusting over for men is the long overcoat. The Dries Van Noten coat shown on the runway was perfection. Its strong shoulders and tailoring to the male body is incredible. In addition to the fit it has texture elements that can’t be beat. It combines shine and fur to add interest and depth to a standard coat or ensemble. This is something that will go from year-to-year, season-to-season. It is worth the investment now.
Finally, another aspect that I loved of the Dries Van Noten menswear line was the element of a statement jacket and texture. A statement jacket can dress up any basic ensemble or add a bit of glam to a formal outfit. The element of texture adds an interest element and takes an outfit to the next level.
Dries Van Noten’s fall 2011 menswear collection was wonderful in its incorporation of texture, shine, details and, of course, fit. The Bowie inspiration shines through in each piece of the line and is absolutely splendid.
